Body Image

The Beach

The Beach

It’s that time of year again, when we drag out last year’s beach gear and think – “I should lose weight, I should have gone to the gym, I should have done something about my body.”

The articles in the media about “Am I beach body ready?” will make most of us feel bad about ourselves and self conscious about the way we look.

At RELATE we often see that these negative feelings and thoughts translate into problems of self-image which, can turn into sexual issues. If I think I look awful, how can anyone else find me attractive?

The fact is that few of us have perfect bodies but we are much more than that to our partners.Being comfortable and confident in ourselves and with our looks is far more attractive than being very self conscious and withdrawn.

I’m not advocating an unhealthy lifestyle but an acceptance of what we can realistically do within our budgets and busy lives. One thing that is possible is to drink water – it helps the digestive system and with feelings of tiredness.

So, if you want to improve your health and fitness – great. That’s a positive step but internalising dissatisfaction with your looks and giving yourself a bad time can lead to greater problems.

As I’m living in Devon, I’m going to hit those lovely beaches this weekend – and enjoy myself.
